How Prioritizing Self-Care Helps You Become a Better Advocate
Tips and Resources to Integrate Self-Care into Your Routine
Does this sound like you? You’re a good person and you want to stand up for what is right. You’ve taken action toward making eco-forward choices and you are passionate about making the world a better place, not just in nature but for humanity’s sake as well. Day-in and day-out, your choices reflect these beliefs but chaos seems to emerge from the shadows at every turn and you’re getting tired.
Change takes time.
Advocating for social justice, environmentalism, political legitimacy and more isn’t something you can do with waning energy levels. If you are stressed, on the verge of burn-out, or just plain exhausted, you are not able to function as an efficient and effective champion for change. Eventually, your general health will suffer - what kind of impact can you make when you’re depleted and out of commission in bed?
It’s time to fill your own cup.
It’s time to practice some self-care.
Creating change is not something that can be achieved with overnight success. It’s a long battle with more resistance than there ought to be. You need to take care of yourself. Your resilience in the face of closed-minded obstinacy will make all the difference in the world.
Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated and can totally be done in a way that also acts as a statement toward your advocacies. Love Your Mother Boutique (LYMB) urges you to take part in as many of the following self-care suggestions as possible so that you can continue to join us in our endeavours to make this world a better place.
Here’s your permission slip to take care of “you” first!
We’ve often been taught to put other's needs before our own as a sign of generosity and simply being polite but in actuality, this practice might be doing everyone a disservice. You can’t possibly show up as your best self if you haven’t taken the opportunity to create that version of yourself in the first place. So, here’s your permission slip to do so - You’re worth it.
Schedule your self-care
“You’re not just going to magically show up in yoga class.”
- Meghan - Lovely Human School
Just as you would put an important meeting or appointment on your calendar, so too should you be setting self-care as a priority in your time table. It doesn’t have to be a class or anything formal but setting aside a set period of time to intentionally take care of your mental, emotional, and physical well-being will change the entire dynamic of your day-to-day.
Boundaries - a buzzword in the self-care space, but what does it mean and how do we do it? First and foremost, you’ve got to give it to get it. What that means is that if you do not give yourself the boundaries you need then you cannot expect to get that space, unprompted, from others. Be your own advocate just as enthusiastically as you support justice on Our Mother Earth.
Be present and live in the moment, within yourself, and take note of what makes you tick. Meditate, take up a joyful hobby, have an indulgent eco-forward bath - whatever you do, do it for yourself. Find that inner calm and fuel your ambitions with the satisfaction that comes with connecting to your true self.
Drop your shoulders
Unclench your jaw
Flatten your palms
Breath in - Breathe out
We all hold stress in different ways but it only really becomes problematic when we allow that tension to remain and build up until it debilitates us. Find a means to let it out in a way that feels right for you: listen to music, dance, go for a run - whatever it is that gets you on the path to being present and positive.
Write to yourself, write to the universe, write to no one - it’s totally your call but write nonetheless. It doesn’t have to be pretty or inspired. Use your journal to spill all of the excess you’re carrying around onto the page. Use prompts, affirmations, lists, gratitudes, whatever works for you. There are scientific studies and case studies to support the value of journaling and how it can propel you to a space of satisfying self-care and development using the written word.
This is the part where we indulge in some Icky Self Care - really tuning into our mindsets and general wellbeing with regard to daily activities that keep things moving smoothly and in the direction of our dreams. Tackle your inner demons, establish or get rid of tricky habits, and committing to self-improvement in all facets of life. Doing this in a safe and respected space is what will really make a difference in your resilience as a champion for positive change.
Give yourself grace
“Environmentally responsible lifestyles must be coupled with a forgiving approach to times when you must take less than ideal routes.”
- Sam & Lance -
In all that we fight for there will inevitably be moments when our preferred circumstances are thwarted for a more challenging and unsatisfactory outcome. Don’t let these times of uncertainty distract you from the end goal. Be forgiving of yourself and the environment in causing you grief then move forward with all the resilience of a weathered hero, ready to take on the world.
In all that you aspire to do, through self-care and advocacy, you never have to do it alone. In fact, it can be helpful to call up a friend or family member to remind you or even accompany you in the various ways that you choose to refill your cup - a loving ear and a cozy shoulder can often begin to heal most wounds on their own.
